Castleton’s championship-winning athletic programs and state-of-the-art facilities give student-athletes plenty of reasons to be proud to be a Spartan. Here, you’ll find a culture that embraces college athletics and the traditions that come with it – like our annual Pink the Rink game, the battle for the Maple Sap Bucket, and a hand on pride rock before a big game.
Our student-athletes excel in their sport and in the classroom and are regularly recognized for their academic achievements.

On July 1, 2023, Vermont State University officially launches unifying the best of three colleges: Castleton University, Northern Vermont University, and Vermont Technical College. Athletics is a core element of the student experience and a source of diversity and energy on each of our campuses. Varsity, intramural, and club athletics will continue to be a source of competition, wellness, and fun.
Current and coming student-athletes are wondering: Will we still be Spartans? The answer is a resounding YES!
Our much-loved mascots will remain at each location after becoming Vermont State University. We will continue to proudly compete as Spartans. Varsity athletic options will remain as they are at each campus for the 2022-2023 academic year. Changes to athletic offerings are always made using data analysis. This practice will continue, and any adjustments to varsity athletic offerings in the coming years will be announced at least a year in advance.
