The field of Design and Technology Education varies greatly, therefore “Design Technologies” will allow educators to create their own learning experience as it relates to one main technology (CAD, 3D Printing, Laser Engraving or CNC). Students will choose one of these modules to focus their work on for the week. The main focus will be creating lessons/units that apply the use of the technology either directly or indirectly through their coursework. This course will give students the opportunity to create sample projects/models, test their lesson ideas, troubleshoot the process and gather feedback from peers, all while having direct access to the technology needed.
Select and register for one of the following five areas of focus/modules for the week:

Modules:
CAD (computer aided design) – EDX 5710 S30
Students will have access to, and support with Onshape CAD software, access to Google Sketchup, Fusion360 and TinkerCad, or may bring their own device and software to improve skills with CAD and develop plans to use CAD in their classroom.
3D Printing – EDX 5710 S31
Students will have access to, and support with using Ultimaker 3D printers. 3D design is required in order to 3D print, so experience with 3D CAD design is recommended. Students will have access to Onshape, Google Sketchup, Fusion360 and Tinkercad for 3D design.
Laser Cutting and Engraving – EDX 5710 S32
Students will work with GCC LaserPro Laser engravers, and CorelDraw design software. Laser Engraving is used on many materials such as wood, acrylic, tile, cardboard, glass, and more. Students will have the opportunity to try multiple materials and test many ways to use the laser engraver.
CNC (computer numerical control) – EDX 5710 S33
Students will have access to a Roland MDX-50 benchtop mill, a NEW ShopSabre 4x4 CNC router with automatic tool changer for cutting wood, as well as a CNC Plasma table for cutting metal parts. These technologies can be used in many ways from artistic work to mechanical parts.
Advanced Applications - EDX 5710 S34
This strand is designed for students who have taken one or all of the previous courses, and would like to dive deeper into a specific technology. Work with other educators to build up your knowledge of the technology, try new ideas, and test out projects. You design your learning based on your previous knowledge with the chosen technology.
*This course operates like a “summer institute”, giving students the opportunity to take different modules year after year. In the future, other modules may be available.
Audience: Technology Education, Art, Science, or any teachers, with an earned Bachelor's Degree, that apply design and technology.

Matt attended Castleton University for his undergraduate degree and earned his Master’s degree in Career and Technical Education from Ball State University. He has been teaching at Mount Abraham Union Middle/High School since 2008. Most of this time has been spent teaching Design and Technology Education: Woodworking, Metalworking, CAD, Robotics, Architecture. He enjoys learning new technologies and working to ensure that his students have access to updated technological processes.
