Course Description

Students will be immersed in a project based learning experience as they develop their own unit that corresponds with their grade level interest.  They will experience and learn the main elements of project based learning.  The students will be able to design and create their PBL units with support from other educators and from research based articles.  This course will focus on how to incorporate project based learning into teachers’ existing curriculum and state education standards, with the goal of boosting student involvement, achievement, and interest with minimal planning time.  The projected outcome would be a finished unit plan that incorporates a project based activity, links to standards/curriculum and K-U-D’s.  This course would target teachers and special educators of children preK to 12th grade.

Audience: PreK-12 educators, special educators, counselors and specialists seeking to build project based curriculum that is aligned to standards and performance indicators for their classroom.

Course Goals:

• Promote project based learning in the pre-K through 12 classroom as well as in small group settings
• Demonstrate knowledge of K-U-D’s
• Provide exposure to a variety of project based activities and units
• Provide resources and instruction to support the preK-12 teachers/specialists in curriculum-building.

 Course Objectives:

Teachers participating in this course will:

• Explore project based learning through a variety of general and specialized content knowledge across curricular content areas.
• Develop in depth knowledge of current student learning standards and relevant state and national education initiatives.
• Consider an individual’s abilities, interests, learning environments, cultural and linguistic factors in the selection of instruction and assessment.
• Design interdisciplinary units of instruction that foster growth across curricular content areas.
• Effectively use multiple representations and explanations that capture the key ideas in the discipline and promote each learner’s achievement of content standards.
• Engage in discourse around project based learning including strengths, weaknesses, questions, successes and possible implementation challenges.
• Understand the difference between project based learning, hands-on projects, place based learning and experiential learning.
