Course Description

School leadership sometimes feels like that vaudeville act where the performer has to keep ten plates spinning at once. This Leadership Seminar is a chance to share those experiences with fellow leaders and expand one’s understanding of key concepts around supporting teachers and students such as Act 173 and MTSS, designing effective professional development as well as retaining good teachers. This three week class will culminate in your creation of a Personal Implementation Plan that can be the foundation of your administrative goals for the year.

Course Goals & Objectives

Course Goals:

Increase participant knowledge of leadership practices including:

- Developing systems of academic support
- Building student engagement and positive conduct
- Retaining effective teachers and staff
- Promoting effective professional development and teacher practice
Support school leaders in creating a Personal Implementation Plan that they can use during the next school year.

Course Objectives:

Participants in this course will demonstrate their ability to do the following:

Provide coherent systems of academic and social support, services and accommodations to meet the range of learning needs of each student.
Develop workplace conditions for teachers and other professional staff that promote effective professional development, practice, and student learning.
Cultivate and reinforce student engagement in school and positive student conduct.
Recruit, hire, support, develop, and retain effective and caring teachers and other professional staff.

Instructor

David Wells, M.Ed.

David has been a Vermont teacher, principal and superintendent for over thirty years. He believes in making classrooms safe and engaging for students with plenty of project based learning. When he is not teaching at Vermont State University, you can find David spending time with his grandchildren or restoring vintage typewriters!
