Social and Emotional learning has never been more important than it is now. Schools have been facing new challenges in the area of disciplinary actions, classroom management and safety. As populations change and evolve, our instructional strategies must as well. For many school districts, PBIS seemed to be the answer to motivating students and teaching character education. In this course, we will examine the PBIS framework and see how or if it fits the need of the current population while addressing topics such as equity and inclusion.
We will examine the challenges faced by educators in the environment we knew before the COVID-19 pandemic and look to the future of how we can be prepared to support students in the current classroom climate. We will explore the importance and value of Restorative Practices, trauma-informed practices and mindfulness practices.
You will leave this course with practical strategies, diverse platforms for delivering social and emotional instruction and more tools for your behavior management toolbox. We will explore a variety of self-awareness and self-regulation practices. The strategies you will develop through this course will help you empower students to problem solve when they feel conflict (personally and socially).
Audience: Practicing Educators, Pre-K-12
Course Goals:
Understand the WHY of social and emotional learning
1) Educate and inform on the impact of trauma (primary and secondary) on students and teachers.
2) Educators will learn how to integrate social and emotional learning into their daily teaching practice.
3) Educators will develop a plan for SEL implementation for their classroom
4) Educators will learn how to support themselves and each other within their current school climate.
Course Objectives:
1) Introduce and become familiar with the concept of social and emotional learning (SEL).
2) Educators will read and respond to readings to familiarize themselves with current SEL practices.
3) Educators will create a plan for use in their classroom to drive SEL instruction.
4) Educators will create a plan for self-care in their professional environment
Ryanne Spaulding, M.Ed.
Ryanne Spaulding has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York (2000) and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Castleton University (2004).
Over her 20 years of teaching experience, Ryanne has served in many roles. She has worked at a residential school for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as a general education teacher, a special educator, and currently as a consulting teacher for social and emotional instruction and support. In addition to the consulting teacher role, she serves as the team leader in the implementation process of Restorative practices in grades K-2 for Rutland City Public Schools. She has extensive experience with conducting functional behavioral assessments and developing behavior intervention plans. Over the years, she has worked closely with classroom teachers in the general education environment (K-4) as well as with teachers in alternative classroom settings to develop social and emotional strategies for use will all students. She has been awarded UVM teacher of the year in 2018 and has been nominated for Vermont State Teacher of the year in 2013. She looks forward to sharing her experience and educational strategies with you.
