College Transition Counselor
The Tutor-Advisor will provide direct support and services to graduating seniors to successfully meet the requirements of college enrollment at their chosen institution the summer before they enter college.
Overview of Upward Bound:
Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparation program designed to encourage students to develop the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in post-secondary education. The program focuses on providing equal opportunity for students who would be the first in their respective families to obtain a college degree but because of income level or other disadvantages may not continue their education. Upward Bound serves students in grades 9-12 and is a part of the Academic Support Center at Castleton University.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide direct support and services to low-income and first-generation graduating seniors to ensure that they successfully meet the college enrollment requirements and deadlines, in order to reduce summer melt and ensure college enrollment in the fall.
- Meet with and assess participants’ individual needs and plans for college enrollment.
- Support high school seniors with the college enrollment process, such as finalizing financial aid, registering for fall classes, complete housing and meal plan forms, and health forms.
- Research college enrollment tasks and deadlines; use this information when meeting with participants and their parents to review college enrollment plans.
- Text or email participants throughout the summer with reminders about tasks and deadlines.
- Provide workshops for rising-seniors and/or their parents regarding college enrollment.
- Register and support high school seniors with the Upward Bound Summer Bridge program where they can take up to two courses at Castleton during the summer between high school graduation and fall enrollment.
Qualifications:
- Associates’ degree (or completed 60 credits and in good standing with the institution) in counseling, psychology, social work or education; Bachelors’ Degree preferred
- Familiarity with operation of TRIO programs
- Demonstrated ability to understand the psychological and cultural characteristics of low income and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly from rural environments
- Ability to interact effectively with other college personnel as well as parents and service providers in carrying out the various coordinating and liaison aspects of the position
- Familiarity with texting, email, and social media
Hours and Location:
The position begins May 25, 2020, and ends August 21, 2020. The college transition counselor will work 10-15 hours per week based on the caseload determined by the supervisor.
Wage:
$10.78 per hour ($12 per hour for applicants with a bachelor's degree or more)
