On Wednesday, May 1, Castleton University officially said goodbye to its student-run radio station WIUV and hello to a new way of broadcast, Castleton Internet Radio. WIUV was a licensed class A non-commercial FM station that had been broadcasting on campus since 1976. The new Castleton Internet Radio will be streamed 24 hours a day on TuneIn, a free internet radio service.
Media and Communication major Shudder Hurd-Burnell, general manager of Castleton Internet Radio, shared his excitement about the transition from an FM station to a digital stream.
“I think this is a gateway for a lot of new opportunities,” he said, adding that he wanted to use the opportunity to make participation more appealing to students.
The change to internet streaming means that Castleton will have greater flexibility with content and how it’s delivered. As an FM station, WIUV had to comply with FCC regulations. He hopes that the change makes training easier and “allows for more freedom for students.”
Castleton will be renovating its offline and online studio, located in the Campus Center. This will provide opportunities for the creation of different digital audio files in addition to live streaming, such as podcasts.
Hurd-Burnell said that he is looking forward to maintaining the traditions of college radio through streaming.
