Jahwara Rennalls of the Castleton University men's ice hockey program recently suited up for Team Jamaica at the 2021 LATAM Amerigol Cup, hosted by the NHL's Florida Panthers.
The annual series looks to provide hockey players in Latin America and the Caribbean the opportunity to display their talents and grow the game in their countries. Team Jamaica claimed the 2019 Amerigol LATAM Cup, making strides toward its goal of competing in the Olympics. The team wasn't eligible to vie for the championship in this year's iteration but played six exhibition games against a host of qualifiers. Jamaica cruised to a 6-0 record in those exhibitions, defeating Lebanon, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Argentina, and Colombia. The squad used a clutch shootout performance to defeat Lebanon, but several other victories came in a dominant fashion.
"It was a great experience to represent the Jamaican Olympic Ice Hockey Federation and help the program move toward our goal of competing at the 2026 Winter Olympics," Rennalls said. "Whether or not I'm part of the roster when the puck drops in Italy, I can say I was part of the journey."
Rennalls led all Spartans with three assists in seven games during the 2020-21 season and looks to be a key contributor during his senior campaign, which begins October 29.
