On December 7, 90 senior and junior nursing students from respective Health Promotion and Evidence Based Practice classes gathered in the Campus Center for a poster presentation highlighting the important of a healthy lifestyle. Working in collaboration with the Wellness Center to focus on topics related to “Healthy Campus 2020,” the group shared valuable information and resources through their presentations.
"It was great to have our nursing students partnering with the Wellness Center for a larger cause," said Nursing Professor Leah Matteson.
Throughout the event students presented on various health related topics geared towards creating a more healthy campus, included the hook up culture, sleep hygiene, body image and stress.
One project that proved to be an overwhelming success was Save the Date vs. Hooking Up. Students working on project selected the topic from a list of important issues provided by the Wellness Center. To gather their data, the group sent out a survey to all Castleton students with questions focusing on serious relationships verses hooking up.
“We had 357 students respond to the survey,” said senior Stephanie Cleveland.
Although the students had high hopes for a good response rate, they were pleasantly surprised at the amount of feedback and interest they received across campus. Through their results they were able to prove their theory that the hookup culture stereotype is far from reality, proving a common misconception of college dating.
“It’s not the norm and it doesn’t have to be the norm,” said senior Haley Savage, who also worked on the project. “We want people to know it’s okay to date.”
